Bockrath Flooring & Rugs' hardwood flooring care guide

A lot of our clients who buy hardwood flooring from our Dayton, Ohio showroom have questions about what they need to do, to keep their new hardwood floors in good condition. They want to know about regular and long-term care, as well as ask for tips on how to care for them better. Well, ask and you will receive!

Here are the two main things you need to know to help you keep your hardwood flooring looking great for years to come!

Your broom is your floor's best friend

One of the most important things you can do to keep your hardwood looking great is to regularly sweep it. Gritty dirt and grime can get tracked into the house, and cause serious erosion damage to the finish of your hardwood. Over time, this can lead to a dull finish and fine scratches that can start to trap the grime, and make the problem even worse.

Luckily a quick pass through the house with a broom each day is all you need to do to prevent that from happening!

Moisture is your floor's worst enemy

The best way to mess up your hardwood flooring in a hurry is to get it wet and leave it that way. Conversely, the best way to keep your floor from suffering serious damage is to protect it from moisture.

This means only using a microfiber mop, or a traditional mop that is well wrung out for mopping. It also means cleaning up any liquid spills as quickly as possible, and making sure that you control the humidity levels in any room with hardwood flooring in it. Ideally, wood floors wouldn't be installed in humid rooms, so that's a good first step, but if you find yourself in the position of having hardwood in a moisture prone area of the house, a dehumidifier might be a good investment!

Otherwise, just make sure that you avoid moisture buildup in general, and think about putting some waterproof mats at all doors leading to the outside. This should keep your floors safe from any moisture tracked in from outside.
