A new floor will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest investment you’ll make in your home, so before you visit any carpet store, be sure to plan ahead.
One of the most important things you can do when carpet shopping is to have a very detailed account of the room in which you plan to install it. It doesn’t matter if you live in Dayton, Ohio, Los Angeles, or New York City, you should always do this.
Of course, if you can create a diagram of the room that would be preferable. But if you’re “drawing-challenged” like me, that may not be possible. Just be sure you have a very detailed and accurate measurement that also includes closets, baseboards and other protrusions.
Also include: How many windows are in the room? Does the room have northern or southern exposure (very important!)? What’s the average temperature of the room? Is it a busy room, with heavy foot traffic? Is it in a nursery or another room where sound absorption is especially important? Does anyone use a wheelchair or walker?
It’s important to have all of this information, since some carpet grains lie a bit differently, depending upon style, so if you have all of this information, you can get the most accurate estimate of how much material you’ll need.
Questions and Answers
Do I need to use separate companies to buy the initial product, and then to clean, deliver or repair it?
No, you can find some companies like Bockrath Flooring & Rugs that will take care of everything, a kind of one-stop-shopping for your floor. We’ll even handle repairs, like binding, re-sizing or serging in our Rug Gallery.
Can I move furniture back into a room right away?
No, give it at least 24 hours before you walk on it to be sure the glue is dried. Then wait another day before moving the furniture in.
Will installers move furniture?
Most do, but you need to empty drawers and shelves. Ask your carpet pro about requirements.
Does the warranty have specific requirements about padding, cleaning or anything else?
It’s a good idea to know this since failure to comply, even if you didn’t know, can mean a void warranty.
Is there a charge to dispose of old carpet?
Yes, usually, but the amount will depend upon how well you prepare. Ask your flooring store what they require.
Feel free to come into the Bockrath Flooring & Rugs showroom in Dayton, Ohio, for answers to any of your other questions.
